Listed for a new string quintet by James MacMilllan, who writes with freshness and real substance in a rather traditional Common Practice idiom. As for the rest of the program, Haydn string quartets never hurt. Brahms’s string quartets: well, as I said last week, I find them clotted — and I really like Brahms. Also, not to quibble, but the ratio of new stuff to old on this program is backwards.
