Clarinetist/saxophonist Mike McGinnis is a really good poly-stylistic jazz-based composer; his Angsudden Song Cycle of several years ago is a particular personal favorite that I keep returning to. You never know exactly what he's going to sound like — but you know that it will be piquant and surprising while remaining resolutely listenable, with no pandering. Tonight he celebrates the release of a new album with a little big band. The presence of Caroline Davis on alto can’t hurt.
