You get George Walker’s lovely Lyric for Strings — Exhibit A for the proposition that Mainstream Classical’s decision to stop ignoring composers who aren’t White men is resulting not in a tokenist decline in quality but rather in the programming of fresh music that always should have been widely performed — and some Caroline Shaw. You also get some Brahms, whose string quartets Your Generally Brahms-Positive Compiler finds rather heavy going. And some Schumann — but mercifully only a movement.
