Nick Hakim’s Alt R&B features good songs, interesting textures: nice for a Summer night. June McDoom also creates interesting textures: she’s one of the current breed of singer-songwriters who thanks be don’t shy from using electronics to roughen up their sound (so her work is dark and challenging and not so nice). Evan Wright’s music proves two things: (1) this List doesn’t like everything that’s spacy and (2) texture isn’t everything: in pop and pop-adjacent music, good tunes matter.
