Miguel Gutierrez is sort of having a season here in New York this Spring: hardly a fortnight goes by without a performance. Since he’s a prime example of how an artist can be socially and politically engaged without being pious, simpleminded, or reductive (cf. Liz Swados), that’s a good thing. This duet takes off from Glissant’s conceptions of cross-cultural/racial Relation and Opacity; other artists have addressed that in recent years, but Gutierrez should do it better.
