It is impossible to believe that Kato Hideki’s Hope and Dispair album is closing in on 30 years old. Its moody, fractured soundscapes somehow perfectly convey a Tokyoite’s noir impressions of New York City (although it always sounded to me more like New York in the ‘70s than New York in the ‘90s). Hideki will play through it tonight — and if his band isn’t quite as starry as the John Zorn/Zeena Parkins unit on the original record, well, 30 years is a long time.
MAKE A NIGHT OF IT: In person, superb Palestinian at AlBadawi. Streaming at home, have The Line: pour 1 oz. each of Gin, sweet Vermouth, and Bénédictine into an ice-filled cocktail shaker. Stir. Strain into a chilled Martini glass or coupe.
