Chief Xian aTunde Adjua (f/k/a Christian Scott) was in the forefront of the move to meld jazz and hip-hop in the ‘00s; he’s only gotten more expansive since then. If what makes a great soloist (beyond technique) is an instantly recognizable voice, then Chief Adjua, with his long-limbed lines, fully qualifies. Afro-futurist poet/conceptualist Moor Mother, meanwhile, is quite simply one of the very best people in current culture, period.
